For organizations seeking to improve the capabilities of their volunteers
while mitigating the risk of their response – training is the answer.
This intermediate two-day Team Safety Skills class has been custom designed to provide a comprehensive approach for safety teams. Engaging a threat in a public or crowded environment brings challenges most do not consider. The inclusion of other ‘armed good guys’ further complicates these dynamics.
Topic Overview
Defensive Handgun - essentials include open then concealed draws, efficient marksmanship, and safe gun handling in dynamic settings. While it is expected attendees should already be familiar with these skills, this section allows students to increase their potential.
Partner Skills - Safe partner movement is the corner stone team tactics must be built on.
In my experience teaching instructors, I have found training providers who unintentionally or deliberately accept practices which compromise safety. This is not necessary and counterproductive to our mission. Students will learn appropriate carry positions and progress through a series of partner-based movement exercises leading to realistic applications.
Threat Identification - is an often-neglected skill in most firearms training. You will find it woven throughout this curriculum. In addition to detecting a threat, analyzing the threat is also necessary for an effective response. Identifying and mitigating bystander risk is essential in a public setting.
Lowlight - environments are possible yet undertrained. Mistake of fact shootings increase in lowlight. This Lowlight module will prepare individuals to effectively operate handheld, and if equipped, weapon mounted lights, in the context of a public engagement. Learning to transition between these tools as situations change is essential for safe and effective operations. Deploying lights and firearms without proper training has led to negligent injuries and deaths. This module addresses these needs.
RBT - Reality Based Training - also referred to as ‘force on force’ or ‘simunitions training’
is essential to effectively transfer skills learned in a static environment (live firearms training) to the application of force in a real-life encounter. The lack of this phase of training is evident in numerous Body Cams when unaimed and inaccurate fire is employed under duress by people who successfully pass range standards.
This module allows students to apply skills in the intended context. Providers who offer this technology vary widely in their philosophical approach to using it. Often it starts at the final level of force on force ‘scenarios. This approach ignores established learning philosophies. My approach is often explained as ‘crawl,’ ‘walk,’ ‘run.’ I use the same teaching model proven with all skill-based learning. Drills teach and work better when the desired skill is isolated. Once experienced it can be added to the next and put in context. The final goal is for the student to experience a simulated lethal engagement with a desired outcome. Those who do not perform as expected are merely coached and guided to a successful outcome.
Documented Performance Appraisal - Individual skill performances of safe handling, carry positions, draws, and threat identification will be evaluated on a pass / fail basis. This provides students and administrators an objective assessment of safe firearms handling around teammates and bystanders.
A shooting proficiency course designed to evaluate marksmanship and weapons handling relevant to crowded environment conditions will be administered. This graded qualification provides documentation for shooters who meet the course standards.
note - students will not be dismissed from class because of a low score on the ‘qualification.’ The instrument simply identifies current skill levels. Team administrators often benefit from this objective appraisal.
Prerequisites:
Attendees should hold a valid License to Carry.
Weapons manipulations - Students must be able to competently load, unload, reload and clear malfunctions.
Physically. Students will be standing, walking, and moving on an outdoor range. The surface conditions are dirt, rock, gravel, and uneven. The class will not be canceled for inclement weather unless it is unsafe.
Safe weapons handling is more important than your marksmanship skills. Attendees exhibiting unsafe weapons handling will be removed from training without a refund.
RANGE FEES are an additional $20 per day.
The ETTS Waiver must be completed online prior to arrival.

Safety Policy
Conditioning safe shooters is a mission we take very seriously. Safety is important during training to avoid accidents, but safe weapons handling must be conditioned for it to become a reflexive response under stress. Each class or lesson begins with a safety brief to establish expectations and consequences for unsafe behavior. Minor violations are common in the beginning and will be remediated. Major violations can result in termination of training or removal from group classes.
